The Bai‘ah of PAS

The bai‘ah of PAS sends a cold shiver across the nation. What has politics come to now?! The implications of the bai‘ah are horrifying, to say the very least about it. The innocents are being made pawns in the games of politics, or in the language of the political actors, the “strategies of politics”. The very unit of society and one of the most fundamental, if not indeed the very most fundamental social institution of Islam, is being rocked in the zest for political scores. Divorcing wives and losing children if the husbands switch over loyalties and cross the political divides! These political and politicking husbands – when they adopted this bai‘ah system and indeed did take the bai‘ah– did they not consider how their wives and children will live through this bai‘ah?
These politically intoxicated husbands, did they not realize that they have made their dearest and nearest as deposits in their political career? For the wives, this is worse than the possibility of polygamy; this is the possibility of divorce, the dissolution of their marriage, the wrecking up of their lives and the lost of everything that is the most precious and the most meaningful to them. They will be left with nothing of worth. For the children, in particular the teenagers who are at so delicate an age, how are they to live their days with the thought of the possibility of either father or mother walking out of their lives? The more sensitive and thoughtful ones – how do they face their studies with such thoughts in their heads? For the sake of these precious ones, we pray that they know nothing about these idiosyncrasies.

And the husbands – they are indeed tempting Providence itself! How can these husbands, who see themselves as the champions of noble courses – how can they look into the eyes of their wives and children and not think what they have traded their loved ones with? Politics swings with the political seasons; they change with the socio-political climate. But families do not change with whatever climate, and more often than not, families cling even tighter together when difficulties and tragedies hit them. And yet these social thinkers cannot get their priorities right! How are we to regard these people henceforth?

It is somewhat comforting, but only somewhat and not fully comforting - that the President of PAS and other respected top figures of the party - declared that this bai‘ah is not the party’s policy. Nevertheless, it has been done, and negation or justification of the bai‘ah is meaningless, and in fact makes this whole thing even more pathetic and the bai‘ah even more disgusting and heinous! The end does not justify the means. This wrong MUST BE CORRECTED. The innocents should not suffer and become victims to whoever and to whatever, let alone in the hands of those who they most love, they most adore and they most trust, and who are indeed entrusted by Allah the All Knowing to look after them.

IMAN hereby demands that PAS rectify this situation immediately and properly. Get this bai‘ah dissolved in the proper way, conforming to Islamic injunctions. We are sure that there are competent scholars within PAS to take care of this. We also know as a fact that PAS as a whole is very unhappy and very disturbed by this bai‘ah business and because of that IMAN will not look at these “bai‘ah husbands” as representing PAS. We hope that we are right in doing so. So please rectify this situation immediately. Until the situation is put to right, IMAN, as a Muslimah NGO, will not let this matter go. In fact we are certain that PAS understands well the political implication of this matter too.

Bai‘ah Talak Tiga PAS

Bai‘ah talak tiga PAS telah menimbulkan rasa gerun di seluruh negara. Apa telah jadi kepada politik semasa?! Implikasi bai‘ah talak tiga ini amat membimbangkan. Mereka yang tidak bersalah dijadikan cagaran dalam mainan politik, atau dalam bahasa para politikus, dalam “strategi politik”. Unit paling asas dalam institusi sosial Islam telah digugat dalam keghairahan berpolitik. Mentalakkan isteri talak tiga dan kehilangan anak-anak sekiranya si-suami melompat daripada parti! Para suami politik ini - apabila mereka menerima sistem bai‘ah talak tiga ini, dan berbai‘ah– tidakkah mereka terfikir bagaimana isteri-isteri dan anak-anak mereka akan meneruskan hidup mereka diselubungi oleh bai‘ah itu?

Para suami yang mabuk politik ini, tidakkah mereka menyedari bahawa mereka telah menjadikan orang yang tersayang dan yang terapat sebagai deposit dalam kerjaya politik mereka? Bagi para isteri, ini lebih dahsyat daripada poligami; ini memungkinkan perceraian, berakhirnya perkahwinan, memusnahkan kehidupan mereka dan kehilangan semua yang bermakna dan berharga bagi mereka. Tak ada tinggal apa-apa yang bermakna lagi bagi mereka. Bagi anak-anak, khususnya remaja yang berada dalam usia yang sensitif, bagaimana boleh mereka hidup selesa memikirkan yang ibu atau bapa mereka bila-bila masa boleh dipisahkan dari mereka? Bagi anak-anak yang lebih sensitif dan prihatin – bagaimanakah mereka dapat menumpukan perhatian terhadap pelajaran bila dihantui oleh fikiran-fikiran ini? Demi ketenteraman anak-anak yang dikasehi ini, kita do’akan mereka tidak tahu-menahu tentang pekara karut ini!

Dan para suami – tentunya mereka telah mencabar takdir! Macam manakah para suami ini yang menganggap diri mereka sebagai pejuang murni – sanggup menatap wajah isteri-isteri dan anak-anak mereka yang telah mereka dagangkan dalam kareer politik mereka? Politik berubah mengikut musim; ia berubah mengikut suasana sosio-politik semasa. Walhal, keluarga tidak berubah walau apa pun musimnya. Malah, ahli keluarga akan menjadi lebih rapat apabila berhadapan dengan pelbagai musibah. Nampaknya, para pemikir sosial ini tidak memahami keutamaan mereka. Bagaimanakah wajar kita menilai mereka selepas ini?

Agak menyenangkan sedikit, tetapi tidak sepenuhnya – bila mana Presiden PAS dan ahli-ahli tertinggi yang dihormati dalam parti itu - mengisytiharkan bahawa bai‘ah talak tiga ini bukanlah dasar parti. Namun demikian, bai’ah talak tiga ini telahpun dijalankan. Menafi atau menjustifikasikan bai‘ah itu tidak memberi sebarang makna, malah menjadikan isu ini lebih menyedihkan, dan lebih kejam dan memualkan! Matlamat tidak boleh menghalalkan cara. Kesalahan ini MESTI DIPERBETULKAN. Mereka yang tidak berdosa tidak boleh dijadikan mangsa oleh sesiapa pun atau untuk apa tujuan sekali pun, apatah lagi oleh mereka yang paling disayangi, yang paling disanjungi dan yang paling dipercayai, dan yang telah dipertanggungjawabkan sebagai penjaga mereka oleh Allah Yang Maha Mengetahui.

IMAN dengan ini mendesak PAS menyelesaikan masalah bai‘ah talak tiga ini dengan segera dan dengan sewajarnya mengikut lunas-lunas Islam. Kami yakin PAS mempunyai para ‘ulama’ yang layak dan berkebolehan untuk berbuat demikian. Kami juga faham hakikat bahawa pada umumnya ramai ahli PAS yang sedih dan amat tertekan dengan perkara bai‘ah talak tiga ini dan oleh kerana itu IMAN tidak akan melihat “para suami bai‘ah talak tiga ” ini sebagai mewakili PAS. Kami berharap kami tidak tersilap dalam penilaian kami ini. Oleh itu, harap perbaiki keadaan ini dengan amat segera. Selagi pekara ini tidak selesai, IMAN, sebagai sebuah NGO Muslimah, tidak akan berdiam diri. Malah, kami yakin PAS memahami implikasi isu ini terhadap politik PAS.
